Celebrating a decade of output, Pulco will be releasing a series of blog posts over the coming weeks in the lead-up to the latest album Clay Cutlery. Over to the man himself:

It’s roughly 10 years since the first Pulco album was released !!!

To celebrate the fact I’m going to be posting about some of the music I’ve made over the years here on this site

First up is the home-fi classic – ‘Cactus Fog’ !

The album was recorded on a borrowed digital minidisc 4 Track in Musicbox rehearsal studios in Cardiff sometime around 1998/99 but didn’t see the light of day until a few years later.

I’d begun to write and record some of the music on a small cassette player during a Derrero recording session up at Twin Peaks studio in Brecon and continued to work on the music at home when I had a spare moment or two.

If there was free space at the rehearsal room I’d go in and make some noise. It was also the first time that I tried to play the drums properly on a recording !

I was exploring the idea of cutting up bits of newspapers to find lyrics and interesting text that would suggest themes for the songs. I was also reading ‘The Steppenwolf’ by Herman Hesse. Lots of these things influenced the album.

After it was finished I pretty much did nothing with the songs as life in Derrero took off again and we were busy doing other things. The tunes hung around though and eventually my friend Mark Foley asked if he could release the album on Musicbox Records which he did in 2002.

After that, the album remained unavailable again until I put it out on Bandcamp, mainly because I hate the vocals !!!! Still do and always will.

There are however some smashing ideas on it so I guess it is time for you to make your own mind up.

Have a listen below and check out the tunes

Cheers all .
